Annie Stokely, 2014 Alive Intern

In the summer of 2014, I was lucky enough to be accepted into the internship program at Alive Literary Agency. Since I was six years old, I’ve known I wanted a career in books. Even though I came to Alive with a basic understanding of the publishing world from the semester of Editing & Publishing I’d just completed in the spring, this seven-week internship has brought the publishing industry and my future career into a sharper focus than any class.

There were of course the mountains of filing and busy work that’s kind of implied with the word “intern,” but each member of the Alive team bent over backward to include me in their current projects. I edited contracts, wrote part of a book proposal, rejected or recommended manuscripts, promoted our authors through social media, and was welcomed into conference calls between agents and authors, agents and publishers, and all the agents on our team.

If you’re considering an internship in the publishing world, don’t hesitate to apply to Alive. I’ve had the opportunity to network with agents who collectively have nearly 80 years of publishing experience, agents who want to see me succeed. I came to Alive Literary Agency with a passion and talent for wordcraft. I’m leaving with direction and confidence.
